If bedtime in your house feels like a nightly negotiation, or if you’re lying awake at 2 a.m. even though you’re exhausted, you’re not alone. Sleep struggles are one of the most common things parents mention to us, and they rarely stay with just one person. When a toddler is up at night, the whole house feels it by morning.
We look at sleep a little differently than you might expect. Before we talk about screens or bedtime routines, we start with the nervous system, because that’s the system that has to shift gears for real rest to happen.
Sleep is a nervous system event
Your body runs on two basic settings. One is the “go” mode, sometimes called fight or flight, that revs you up to handle stress and stay alert. The other is the “rest and recover” mode that slows your heart rate, calms your breathing, and lets your body wind down. Falling asleep, and staying asleep, depends on your body being able to move out of go mode and settle into rest mode.
For a lot of kids and adults, that switch doesn’t flip easily anymore. Busy schedules, screens, stress, and even old physical tension can keep the nervous system stuck in a heightened state. The body is tired, but it can’t quite downshift. That’s when you see the racing mind at night, the kid who fights sleep, or the early waking that leaves everyone dragging.
Why kids struggle to wind down
Children feel this even more than adults do. Their nervous systems are still developing, and they don’t always have the words to explain that they feel wound up. What you see instead is the behavior: the endless bedtime stalling, the meltdowns over pajamas, the child who seems exhausted but simply cannot settle.
Some of this is normal childhood. But when a child is consistently unable to calm down at night, it’s often a sign that their nervous system is running hot and needs help finding the brakes.
Where chiropractic fits
Our focus as chiropractors is on how well the nervous system is functioning and how freely it can move between those “go” and “rest” states. When we care for a family, we’re working to reduce tension and interference in that system so the body has an easier time settling on its own.
We also use INSiGHT nervous system scans to get an objective look at how a child’s or adult’s nervous system is handling stress. It gives us, and you, a clearer picture than guesswork, and it helps us track whether things are moving in the right direction over time.
Alongside care, a few simple habits go a long way:
- Keep wake-up and bedtime times as consistent as you can, even on weekends
- Dim the lights and power down screens well before bed to let the body cue up rest mode
- Build in a calm wind-down window instead of going full speed until lights out
- Get outside and moving during the day, since daytime activity supports nighttime rest
When to check with your doctor
Chiropractic care can be a real help, but it isn’t the answer to everything. If your child snores loudly, gasps or pauses in breathing during sleep, or is persistently exhausted no matter how much rest they get, please have that evaluated by your pediatrician. The same goes for adults dealing with ongoing insomnia or signs of a sleep disorder. Those situations deserve a medical look, and we’re glad to work alongside your other providers.
